Understanding Hair Colour Types
Permanent colour mixes with developer to lift natural pigment and deposit new colour inside the hair. It is the choice for full grey coverage and lasting changes, and it grows out rather than washing out.
Demi-permanent colour and gloss toners deposit colour without significant lift. They tone blondes, refresh faded lengths, blend early greys and add shine, and they gradually fade over a number of washes.
Semi-permanent and direct dyes are ready to use without developer. Vivid and pastel shades from Crazy Color, Manic Panic and Danger Jones sit on the outside of the hair and fade with washing, so they are ideal for experimenting.
Lighteners and bleach remove natural or artificial pigment so lighter or vivid colours can show. Most powders and creams are mixed with developer and should be used carefully, ideally by a trained professional.

Benefits of Professional Hair Colour
- Precise shades. Professional ranges use numbered levels and tones, so results are predictable and repeatable.
- Reliable grey coverage. Permanent colours are formulated to cover grey hair evenly.
- Controlled lift. Choosing the developer strength lets you decide how much the colour lightens.
- Better condition. Many salon colours contain conditioning oils and care ingredients, and some, such as Mood, are vegan.
- Creative freedom. Vivids, pastels and gloss toners let you change your look without a permanent commitment.
- Value. Buying the exact tubes and developers you need avoids paying for full kits you do not use.
Hair Colour Buying Guide
Know the numbers. The first number is the level, from 1 (black) to 10 or higher (lightest blonde). The numbers after it describe tone, such as ash, gold, copper, red or violet. A 7.0 is a natural medium blonde; a 7.1 is an ash medium blonde.
Pick the right developer. 10 vol (3%) deposits colour or lifts about one level, 20 vol (6%) covers grey and lifts about two levels, and 30 to 40 vol (9 to 12%) lift further. Toners usually use a low-volume or dedicated gloss developer, such as Danger Jones Gloss Toner Developer.
Use the brand's own system. Colour, developer and mixing ratio are designed together, so pair Igora with Igora developer, Koleston with Welloxon and so on.
Tone after lightening. Blonde hair often lifts yellow or orange. A gloss toner, such as Danger Jones or Joico Lumishine, neutralises it.
Prepare for vivids. Bright and pastel shades show best on pre-lightened hair. Apply to clean, dry hair and rinse with cool water.
Always patch and strand test. Follow each product's instructions, carry out a skin allergy test before every colour service and test a strand to check the result.

Hair Colour FAQs
What is the difference between permanent and semi-permanent hair colour?
Permanent colour mixes with developer and changes the hair's pigment, so it grows out rather than washing out. Semi-permanent colour sits on the outside of the hair and fades gradually with washing.
What is demi-permanent hair colour?
Demi-permanent colour deposits colour with little or no lift, using a low-strength developer. It is used for toning, refreshing faded colour and blending greys.
What does hair colour numbering mean?
The first number is the level, from 1 (black) up to 10 or more (lightest blonde). The numbers after it show tone, such as ash, gold, copper or red, depending on the brand's system.
What is a developer?
Developer, also called peroxide or oxidant, activates permanent and demi-permanent colour and lightener. Its strength, shown in volume or percentage, decides how much lift you get.
Which developer strength should I use?
As a general guide, 10 vol (3%) is for depositing or one level of lift, 20 vol (6%) for grey coverage and about two levels, and 30 to 40 vol (9 to 12%) for more lift. Always follow the colour brand's instructions.
Can I mix brands of colour and developer?
It is best to use the developer made for your colour line, because mixing ratios and formulas are designed together.
What is a gloss toner?
A gloss toner is a demi-permanent colour used after lightening to adjust tone and add shine. Danger Jones Gloss Toners are among our best sellers.
Why do I need to tone blonde hair?
Lightening exposes warm yellow and orange pigments. A toner neutralises them to create cooler, softer or more natural-looking blondes.
What is Danger Jones?
Danger Jones is a colour brand known for vivid semi-permanent shades and gloss toners. We stock its toners, developers, colour remover and vivid colours.
What is Crazy Color?
Crazy Color is a range of conditioning semi-permanent colour creams in bright and pastel shades, plus pigment drops and colour-care shampoos.
What is Manic Panic?
Manic Panic makes bright semi-permanent colours such as Hot Hot Pink. The brand describes its colours as vegan and not tested on animals.
How long does semi-permanent colour last?
It depends on the shade, your hair's porosity and how often you wash. Vivid shades can last from a couple of weeks to over a month with colour-safe care.
Do I need to bleach my hair before vivid colours?
Usually, yes. Bright and pastel shades show true only on pre-lightened hair. On dark hair they may give a subtle tint at most.
How do I make semi-permanent colour last longer?
Wash less, use cool water and sulfate-free or colour-extending shampoo, such as Crazy Color Colour Extend, and avoid excess heat and sun.
What are Crazy Color Power Pigment Drops?
They are a high-concentration colour additive you can mix into conditioner or semi-permanent colour to intensify or customise a shade.
Can I mix semi-permanent shades?
Yes. Most direct dyes can be mixed together, or diluted with conditioner or a clear mixer to create pastel versions.
Will permanent colour cover grey hair?
Most permanent colours are designed to cover grey when used with the recommended developer, usually 20 vol. Very resistant grey may need a natural-based shade.
What is a root touch-up spray?
It is a temporary spray, such as Milk Shake SOS Roots, that hides regrowth and greys until your next colour. It washes out with shampoo.
What is a colour remover?
A colour remover lifts artificial dye from the hair without bleaching natural pigment. Danger Jones Colour Remover and Malibu C Direct Dye Lifter are examples.
Can colour remover take out permanent colour?
Some removers work on permanent colour and others only on direct or semi-permanent dyes. Check the product page before buying.
What is the difference between bleach powder and lightening cream?
Both lighten hair. Powders are often used with foils for maximum lift, while creams are easier to apply on-scalp or freehand. Results depend on developer and timing.
What is Fanola No Yellow?
Fanola No Yellow is a blonde range that includes toning shampoo and mask, a violet peroxide and blue or black lighteners such as No Yellow Blue Lightener.
What is Mood hair colour?
Mood is a professional colour range. Its permanent colour creams are described as vegan and plant-based.
What is Igora Vibrance?
Igora Vibrance is Schwarzkopf Professional's demi-permanent, tone-on-tone colour. The brand says it lasts up to 25 shampoos.
What is Joico Lumishine?
Joico Lumishine is a demi-permanent colour line. Lumishine Liquid Demi shades are ammonia-free and deposit-only, and the Clear shade adds shine.
Do I need a patch test before colouring?
Yes. Most colour brands recommend a skin allergy test 48 hours before every colour service, even if you have used the product before.
Can I colour my hair at home with professional colour?
Many people do, but professional colour is designed for trained hairdressers. If you are unsure, especially with bleach, speak to a colourist first.
How much colour do I need?
Shoulder-length hair usually needs one 60 to 100ml tube for roots and lengths, while long or thick hair may need two. Mix with developer at the ratio on the tube.
What mixing ratio should I use?
It varies by brand, often 1:1, 1:1.5 or 1:2 colour to developer. Always check the instructions for your colour line.
What accessories do I need for colouring?
A non-metal bowl, tint brush, gloves, clips, a cape or old towel and a timer. Our Hair Colour Accessories collection has everything.
How long should I leave colour on?
Follow the brand's timing, which is often 30 to 45 minutes for permanent colour and less for toners. Leaving it longer does not always make it darker.
Can I colour freshly bleached hair?
Yes, toners and semi-permanent colours are often applied straight after lightening. Follow your colour line's guidance for timing.
Why did my hair turn brassy after colouring?
Brassiness comes from warm pigments exposed when hair is lightened. Use a toner, then purple or blue-pigment shampoo at home.
How do I go darker safely?
Going darker is easier than going lighter. For big changes, especially from very light blonde, a colourist may recommend a pre-pigmentation step.
Can I use hair colour on eyebrows or lashes?
No. Use only products made specifically for brows and lashes, such as those in our Lash and Brow Tinting collection.
How should I care for coloured hair?
Use colour-safe shampoo and conditioner, wash in cool water and protect from heat and sun. Our Colour-Treated Hair Care collection has suitable products.
Do you sell colour in individual shades?
Yes. Each shade of every range, such as Koleston Perfect, Igora, Mood, Color On and FarmaVita, is listed on its own.
Do you sell salon-size developers?
Yes. Developers come in small 65ml bottles, such as Crema Color, up to 1 litre salon sizes from brands like Schwarzkopf, Mood and Fascinelle.
Is professional colour safe for sensitive scalps?
Some people react to colour ingredients. Always do a skin test, follow the instructions, and stop using a product if irritation occurs.
Can I get help choosing a shade?
Yes. Email care@zilion.co.nz with your current colour and the result you want. For major changes, a salon consultation is best.
