About Curling Irons and Wands
A curling iron, or tong, has a clamp that holds the ends of the hair while you wind it around the barrel, giving a polished curl with a smooth end. A wand has no clamp: you wrap the hair around the barrel by hand, which gives a more relaxed, undone wave. Conical wands taper from wide to narrow, so the curl is looser at the root and tighter at the ends. Triple-barrel wavers press the hair into uniform S-shaped waves.
Barrel material matters. Ceramic heats evenly and is gentle on hair, titanium heats quickly and holds a high temperature for thick or resistant hair, and blends such as titanium ceramic, Nano Titanium and Graphite Titanium aim to combine both. Barrel size is the other big choice: 13 to 19mm for tight curls, 25 to 32mm for classic bouncy curls, and 38mm and larger for loose waves and volume.

How to Curl Your Hair
Start with dry, brushed hair and a heat protectant. Section the hair with clips and work from the bottom up. Take a section about the width of the barrel, wrap it around the barrel away from your face, hold for a few seconds and release. Let each curl cool completely before touching it, as curls set as they cool. When all sections are done, run your fingers through for softer waves or leave them for defined curls, and finish with a light hairspray.
