Exfoliating is the quickest way to make skin look and feel smoother. A good scrub or exfoliator clears away the dull, dry surface layer so moisturiser sinks in, makeup sits better and rough patches on elbows, heels and hands soften. About Scrubs and Exfoliators
There are two ways to exfoliate. Physical exfoliators use fine particles to buff the skin: rice in Skintruth Fine and Gentle Rice Polish, walnut shell in HeadBlade HeadShed, apricot in L3VEL3 Apricot Facial Scrub, and sea salt or sugar in the Natural Look Natural Spa body scrubs. Chemical exfoliators use acids such as glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid to loosen dead cells, as in Minimalist Glycolic Acid 8% Exfoliating Liquid and the Minimalist and Brillare peeling solutions. Some products, such as Aspect Illuminating Polish, combine both.
Different areas need different strength. Facial skin is thinner and does best with fine grains or mild acids once or twice a week. Body skin can take coarser salt and sugar scrubs. Feet, with their thicker skin, handle the most intensive exfoliation, which is why foot scrubs such as Natural Look Cool Feet Exfoliating Salt Scrub and Skintruth Pedi Foot Scrub are so much grittier.

Scrub Buying Guide
Face: go gentle. Choose fine particles, such as rice or a micro exfoliator, or a mild acid. Sensitive skin often does better with an acid exfoliator or a very fine polish than with a gritty scrub.
Oily or congested skin. A clay or mud scrub such as L3VEL3 Mud Facial Scrub, or a salicylic acid exfoliator such as Minimalist AHA BHA 10%, helps keep pores clear.
Body: salt or sugar. Salt scrubs are more invigorating and great for legs and arms. Sugar scrubs are a little gentler and melt as you use them.
Feet and hands. Use a dedicated foot or hand scrub; they are stronger than face scrubs and made for thicker skin.
Shaving. Men's face scrubs and the HeadBlade scalp scrub are designed to go on before the razor.

How to Use a Scrub
Use scrubs on damp skin. For the face, take a small amount and massage in light circles for 30 seconds, avoiding the eye area, then rinse with lukewarm water. For the body, apply in the shower and work upwards from the feet, paying attention to elbows, knees and heels. Rinse well and follow with moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Exfoliate the face once or twice a week and the body two or three times a week, and skip broken, sunburnt or irritated skin. Acid exfoliators are applied to clean, dry skin following the directions on the pack, and always followed by sunscreen during the day.

What does a scrub do?
A scrub uses fine particles to buff away dry, dead surface skin, leaving it smoother and brighter and helping moisturiser absorb.
What is the difference between a scrub and an exfoliator?
A scrub is a physical exfoliator with grains. Exfoliator is the wider term, which also covers acid products such as glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid that work without grains.
What is the difference between physical and chemical exfoliation?
Physical exfoliation buffs dead skin away with particles. Chemical exfoliation uses acids to loosen the bonds between dead cells so they shed more easily.
How often should I exfoliate my face?
Once or twice a week suits most people. Sensitive skin may only need it once a week or every fortnight.
How often should I exfoliate my body?
Two or three times a week is usually enough for the body. Feet can take more frequent exfoliation if they are very rough.
Can I exfoliate every day?
Daily scrubbing is too much for most faces. Some gentle acid cleansers are designed for daily use, but check the directions and watch for irritation.

What is a face peel?

Can I use an acid exfoliator with retinol?
It can be too much for many people. Use them on different nights and watch for signs of irritation.
Do I need sunscreen after exfoliating?
Yes. Freshly exfoliated skin, especially after acids, can be more sensitive to the sun. Wear sunscreen every day.

When should I not exfoliate?
Skip it on sunburnt, broken, very irritated or freshly waxed skin, and check with your doctor if you use prescription skincare.
Can I exfoliate if I am pregnant?
