Hair Wavers in New Zealand
A waver is the fastest way to get an even, repeatable wave pattern. Instead of wrapping each section around a barrel the way you would with a curling wand, you clamp the hair between heated barrels or plates and press the wave in, then move down the section. The result is the uniform, crease-free texture you see in beach waves, mermaid waves and deeper retro styles, usually in far less time than curling.
This collection brings together the wavers we carry from ghd and Silver Bullet: triple barrel wavers in several barrel sizes, a deep waver, an adjustable four-in-one waver and a tapered conical waver. Zilion is an official NZ stockist of both brands, and every styler ships from within New Zealand.
About Hair Wavers
Most wavers use three barrels side by side. When the outer two barrels close over the middle one, the hair is pressed into an S-shaped wave. The size of the barrels decides the look: smaller barrels give tighter, more defined waves, while larger barrels give looser, softer movement. Deep wavers use bigger, more sculpted barrels for bold, glamorous waves, and adjustable wavers let you change the wave depth with one tool.
Barrel material also matters. Ceramic and ceramic tourmaline barrels heat evenly and are popular for reducing frizz, titanium heats quickly and holds heat well, and ghd uses PTC heater technology to keep all three barrels of the Curve Wave at a consistent 185°C. Whatever you choose, always use a heat protection spray first.

Benefits of a Hair Waver
- Even, uniform waves. Clamping gives the same wave pattern from section to section, which is hard to match with a wand.
- Faster styling. Each clamp shapes a wide section, so a full head of waves takes less time than curling.
- Long-lasting texture. Pressed waves tend to hold well, especially once they cool and are set with hairspray.
- Easy for beginners. There is no wrapping or twisting, just clamp, hold and move down the hair.
- Works on most lengths. Wavers suit shoulder-length to long hair, and shorter styles can use the smaller barrels.
- Choice of looks. Loose beach waves, tighter mermaid waves or deep vintage waves, depending on the barrel.
Hair Waver Buying Guide
Loose beach waves. Choose a triple barrel with larger barrels, such as the ghd Curve Wave or the Silver Bullet WonderCurl 28mm.
Tighter, defined waves. Smaller barrels give more definition. The City Chic Triple Barrel Wand 16-19mm and the City Chic 25mm suit this look and shorter lengths.
Bold, glamorous waves. The Silver Bullet Inspire Deep Waver creates deep, sculpted waves.
More than one look. The Silver Bullet Ocean Waves 4 In 1 lets you switch between four wave depths.
Fine or damaged hair. Use the lowest heat that holds the wave. Tools with adjustable temperature, such as the WonderCurl's LCD control, make this easier, and ghd's fixed 185°C is designed to be hair-friendly.
Travel. The WonderCurl is dual voltage, which is handy if you travel overseas with your styler.
Protect your hair. Pair any waver with a heat protectant from our Heat Protection collection.
How to Use a Hair Waver
Start with clean, completely dry hair and mist on a heat protection spray. Section the hair into manageable pieces about the width of the barrels. Clamp the waver close to the roots, hold for a few seconds, then open it and move down the section, overlapping the last wave slightly so the pattern stays continuous. Work through the whole head the same way. Let the waves cool completely before you touch them, then break them up gently with your fingers and finish with a light hairspray or texture spray.

Hair Waver FAQs
What is a hair waver?
A hair waver is a heated styling tool that clamps sections of hair between barrels or plates to press in an even wave pattern, rather than wrapping hair around a barrel.
What is the difference between a waver and a curling wand?
A wand wraps hair around a single barrel to create curls. A waver clamps hair to press in uniform S-shaped waves, which is usually quicker and more consistent.
What is a triple barrel waver?
It has three barrels side by side. When it closes, the hair is pressed between them to form a wave. The ghd Curve Wave and Silver Bullet WonderCurl are both triple barrel wavers.
What is a deep waver?
A deep waver has larger, more sculpted barrels that create bold, deep waves. The Silver Bullet Inspire Deep Waver is in this style.
Which hair waver is your best seller?
The ghd Curve Wave Triple Barrel Waver is our best-selling waver, followed by the Silver Bullet City Chic Triple Barrel Wand 16-19mm and the WonderCurl 28mm.
What temperature does the ghd Curve Wave reach?
ghd says PTC heater technology keeps all three barrels at 185°C, a temperature it describes as hair-friendly.
Can I change the temperature on the ghd Curve Wave?
The Curve Wave is designed to work at one optimum temperature of 185°C, so there are no heat settings to choose.
What are the features of the Silver Bullet WonderCurl?
It has three 28mm ceramic barrels with anti-static surfaces, heats up to 230°C with LCD temperature control, and has dual voltage, a 360° swivel cord, 60-minute auto-off and a 2-year warranty.
What size are the City Chic Triple Barrel Wand barrels?
The barrels taper from 16mm to 19mm, which gives defined, uniform waves and suits hair that can wrap around the barrel.
What is the difference between the two City Chic wavers?
The City Chic Triple Barrel Wand has tapered 16 to 19mm barrels for tighter waves, while the City Chic Triple Barrel 25mm has three 25mm ceramic barrels for fuller, voluminous waves.
What is the Silver Bullet Ocean Waves 4 In 1?
It is an adjustable waver with four wave depths, from soft beach waves to deep waves, using ceramic tourmaline with heat settings up to 230°C.
Is the Rose Gold Titanium Conical Large Waver a waver or a wand?
It has a tapered 19 to 32mm titanium barrel, so it is used more like a conical wand to create curls and waves. It suits fine, medium and thick hair.
Which waver gives beach waves?
Triple barrel wavers with larger barrels, such as the ghd Curve Wave and Silver Bullet WonderCurl 28mm, are made for loose beach waves.
Which waver gives mermaid waves?
Smaller triple barrels, such as the City Chic Triple Barrel Wand 16-19mm or the City Chic 25mm, give tighter, more defined mermaid-style waves.
Which waver suits short hair?
Smaller barrels are easier on short hair. Hair needs to be long enough to clamp comfortably, usually around chin length or longer.
Which waver suits long hair?
Any of our wavers works on long hair. Larger barrels like the ghd Curve Wave and WonderCurl 28mm cover sections quickly.
Which waver is best for fine hair?
Choose a tool with adjustable heat and use a lower setting, or the ghd Curve Wave at its fixed 185°C. Always use heat protection.
Which waver is best for thick hair?
Thick hair benefits from higher heat options and larger barrels. The WonderCurl 28mm and Inspire Deep Waver reach up to 230°C.
What does ceramic tourmaline do?
Ceramic tourmaline barrels heat evenly and are popular for reducing frizz and adding shine. Silver Bullet uses it on the Inspire Deep Waver and Ocean Waves.
What does a titanium barrel do?
Titanium heats quickly and distributes heat evenly. Silver Bullet uses it on the Rose Gold Titanium Conical Large Waver.
Can I use a waver on wet hair?
No. Only use a waver on completely dry hair. Using hot tools on damp hair can damage it.
Do I need a heat protectant?
Yes. Always apply a heat protection spray before using a waver to help protect your hair from heat damage.
How long should I hold the waver on each section?
A few seconds is usually enough. Fine hair needs less time and thick hair a little more. Avoid holding longer than you need.
How do I make waves last longer?
Let each section cool fully before touching it, then set the style with a light hairspray. Starting with a texture spray can also help.
How do I stop gaps between waves?
Overlap the last wave slightly each time you move the waver down the section, so the pattern stays continuous.
Should I start at the roots or the ends?
Start near the roots, keeping the barrels away from the scalp, then work your way down the section to the ends.
How do I avoid burning my scalp?
Keep the barrels a safe distance from the scalp and use a heat-resistant glove if you have one. Never touch the hot barrels.
Can I use a waver on extensions?
Many human hair extensions can be heat styled, but check with your extension supplier first. Synthetic hair may melt.
Can I use a waver on coloured hair?
Yes, but heat can fade colour over time. Use heat protection and the lowest temperature that holds your wave.
How often can I use a hair waver?
Use it as often as you need, but give your hair heat-free days where you can, and keep it well conditioned.
Do wavers damage hair?
Any heat styling can cause damage with frequent use or high heat. Heat protection, lower temperatures and good conditioning reduce the risk.
How do I clean my waver?
Unplug it and let it cool completely, then wipe the barrels with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove product build-up.
Is there an auto shut-off?
The Silver Bullet WonderCurl has a 60-minute auto-off. Check each product page for the features of other models.
Can I travel overseas with a waver?
The WonderCurl is dual voltage, so it can be used overseas with the right plug adaptor. Check other models before travelling.
How long does a waver take to heat up?
Most wavers in this collection heat up quickly, usually within a minute or two. Wait for the full temperature before styling.
Can men use hair wavers?
Yes. Wavers work well on medium to long hair for anyone who wants texture or waves.
Can I get a waver as a gift?
Yes. Wavers make a popular gift for anyone who loves beach waves. The City Chic Triple Barrel 25mm is a good choice at a lower price point.
What else do I need with a waver?
A heat protection spray, sectioning clips and a light hairspray or texture spray. You can find these in our Heat Protection and Hair Tools collections.
How do I store my waver?
Let it cool fully, close it, and loosely wrap the cord. Avoid wrapping the cord tightly around the tool, which can damage it.
Do your wavers come with a warranty?
The Silver Bullet WonderCurl comes with a 2-year warranty. Warranty details for other models are on each product page, or email care@zilion.co.nz to check.
