Glossy hair reflects light because the surface of each strand is smooth and sealed. A gloss service gets you there with a sheer, acidic or demi-permanent colour that tones and adds shine at the same time, while at-home glosses, glazes and shine serums keep that finish going between appointments. Our Hair Gloss collection brings both together, with more than 220 products for colourists and for anyone who wants brighter, shinier hair.
Zilion is an official NZ stockist of every brand here, including Joico, Danger Jones, Fanola, DesignMe, Echosline, Keracolor, Pureology, Alfaparf Milano, Redken and Floractive. You will find professional gloss toners and developers alongside in-shower glazes, gloss shampoos, masks and serums.
About Our Hair Gloss Collection
There are two main kinds of gloss. Professional glosses are deposit-only colours, usually demi-permanent and often acidic, that are mixed with a low-volume developer and applied in the salon. They can be clear for pure shine, or tinted to tone blonde, refresh faded brunette or soften greys. Danger Jones Gloss Toner, Joico Lumishine and Blonde Life Demi Gloss, Fanola Glow & Glossy and Echosline Echos Light all sit in this group.
At-home glosses are ready to use. Tinted glazes such as Keracolor High Shine Tinted Gloss go on in the shower, toning top coats such as Pureology Color Fanatic Top Coat + Tone seal and tone blonde, and gloss shampoos, masks, oils and serums smooth the cuticle so hair catches the light. Most people use both: a gloss service every few weeks and gloss care at home in between.

Liquid demi glosses. Joico Lumishine Liquid Demi is an ammonia-free, deposit-only colour used for glossing, toning, correcting and blending grey, and the Joico Blonde Life Demi Gloss shades tone and glaze pre-lightened hair.

Benefits of a Hair Gloss
- Noticeable shine. Acidic and clear glosses smooth the cuticle so hair reflects more light.
- Tone correction. Tinted glosses neutralise brass in blondes and refresh faded brunettes and reds.
- Gentle on hair. Deposit-only, no-lift glosses add colour without lightening, so they are much kinder than permanent colour.
- Softer greys. Demi glosses such as Joico Lumishine can blend early greys for a softer result.
- Smoother feel. Many glosses contain conditioning ingredients, so hair feels silkier as well as looking shinier.
- Fresher colour between visits. In-shower glosses, top coats and colour masks extend the life of a salon colour.
- Low commitment. Gloss fades gradually, so there is no hard regrowth line.
Hair Gloss Buying Guide
Decide between salon and home. Professional glosses need mixing with developer, timing and a strand test, and are usually applied by a colourist. In-shower glosses, toning top coats, colour masks and serums are made for home use.
Choose clear or tinted. Clear glosses such as Danger Jones 0.0 or Joico Lumishine Clear add shine without changing colour. Tinted glosses do both, so match the tone to the result you want: violet or platinum for brassy blondes, gold or copper for warmth, and neutral or brown shades to refresh brunettes.
Match the depth. A gloss cannot lighten hair. Choose a level that matches your current colour or sits slightly below it.
Use the right developer. Each professional gloss system has its own developer, such as the Danger Jones Gloss Toner Developer for Danger Jones Gloss Toners. Using the matching Developer gives predictable results.
Keep the shine at home. A sulfate-free gloss shampoo, a weekly mask and a drop of shine serum on dry ends help a gloss last longer. Heat protection matters too, because hot tools dull the cuticle.
Think about timing. Many people book a gloss every few weeks between full colour appointments, or straight after lightening to tone and seal.

Hair Gloss FAQs
What is a hair gloss?
A hair gloss is a sheer, deposit-only treatment that adds shine and can tone colour. Professional glosses are demi-permanent colours mixed with developer; at-home glosses are ready-to-use glazes, masks and serums.
What is the difference between a gloss and a toner?
They overlap. A toner focuses on correcting tone, while a gloss focuses on shine. Many products, such as Danger Jones Gloss Toner, do both.
Does hair gloss lighten hair?
No. Gloss deposits colour or shine only. If you want lighter hair, it needs to be lightened first.
How long does a hair gloss last?
Professional glosses usually fade gradually over several weeks, depending on how often you wash. At-home glosses last a few washes and can be reapplied.
Is hair gloss damaging?
Glosses are deposit-only and many are acidic, so they are much gentler than lightener or permanent colour. Many also contain conditioning ingredients.
What is a clear gloss?
A clear gloss, such as Danger Jones 0.0 or Joico Lumishine Clear, adds shine without changing your colour. Colourists also mix it with tinted shades to soften them.
What is an acidic gloss?
An acidic gloss has a low pH, which helps close the cuticle. That is why acidic glosses leave hair especially shiny and smooth.
What is Danger Jones Gloss Toner?
It is an acidic demi-permanent gloss toner sold in 60ml tubes, with natural, ash, violet, gold and copper shades plus a 0.0 clear. It is our best-selling gloss.
Which developer goes with Danger Jones Gloss Toner?
The Danger Jones Gloss Toner Developer 6Vol 946ml is made for the range. Check the product page for the mixing ratio.
What is Joico Lumishine Liquid Demi?
Lumishine Liquid Demi is Joico's ammonia-free, deposit-only liquid colour, used for glossing, toning, correcting and blending grey.
What is Joico Blonde Life Demi Gloss?
It is a demi-permanent liquid gloss toner that tones, glazes and adds shine to pre-lightened hair, in shades such as 10G Bondi Beach and 12V Lavender Haze.
What is Fanola Glow & Glossy?
Fanola Glow & Glossy is an oil-based, acidic, no-lift demi-permanent colour for toning and glossing, in natural and ash shades.
What is Keracolor High Shine Tinted Gloss?
It is an in-shower glaze with keratin and squalane that adds a sheer colour boost and shine in 3 to 5 minutes. Shades include Platinum, Copper, Merlot, Mocha and Espresso.
How do I use Keracolor Tinted Gloss?
Follow the instructions on the pack: apply in the shower after shampooing, leave for the stated time, then rinse. Gloves help avoid tinted hands.
What is Pureology Color Fanatic Top Coat + Tone?
It is an at-home high-gloss toning top coat. The Purple version neutralises yellow in blonde hair, and the Blue version targets orange tones.
What is Wella Color Fresh Mask Golden Gloss?
It is a colour-depositing mask that refreshes golden tones while it conditions, in about 10 minutes.
What is the Redken Acidic Color Gloss range?
It is Redken's range for coloured hair, with a sulfate-free shampoo, conditioner, heat protection leave-in and Naked Gloss shine oil designed to keep colour vibrant and shiny.
What is Pureology Smooth Gloss?
Smooth Gloss is Pureology's range for frizz-prone, colour-treated hair, with a sulfate-free shampoo, mask and Silkmorphose spray that smooth and add shine.
Which shine serum is best?
It depends on your hair. Alfaparf Semi De Lino Cristalli Liquid and Osmo Blinding Shine are lightweight; Echosline Look Gloss Crystal also helps with frizz on stressed hair.
Can I gloss my hair at home?
Yes, with at-home products such as Keracolor tinted glosses, toning top coats, colour masks and gloss serums. Professional glosses are best left to an experienced colourist.
Can a gloss cover grey hair?
A demi gloss can blend and soften early greys, but it will not give full grey coverage like permanent colour.
Can a gloss fix brassy blonde?
Yes. A violet or platinum gloss, or a toning top coat, neutralises yellow in blonde hair.
Can I gloss brunette or red hair?
Yes. Brown, copper, red and clear glosses refresh faded colour and add shine to darker hair.
Can I gloss natural, uncoloured hair?
Yes. A clear or tonal gloss adds shine and a subtle tone shift to natural hair without lightening it.
Should I gloss after lightening?
Many colourists gloss straight after lightening to tone and seal the hair. A gloss also helps refresh tone between lightening appointments.
How often can I gloss my hair?
Many people gloss every four to eight weeks. At-home glosses and colour masks can be used more often, following the pack instructions.
Should I do a patch test before a gloss?
Yes. For oxidative glosses mixed with developer, follow the brand's instructions for a skin allergy test before use.
Do I need gloves?
Yes, for professional glosses and tinted at-home glosses. They help protect your skin and stop your hands from staining.
How much gloss do I need?
A 60ml tube often covers short to mid-length hair; long or thick hair may need more. Check the mixing ratio on the product page.
What aftercare keeps a gloss shiny?
Use a sulfate-free shampoo, a weekly mask, heat protection and a little shine serum on dry ends. Lukewarm water also helps.
Why does my gloss fade quickly?
Very porous hair, hot water, clarifying shampoos and frequent washing speed up fading. Switching to a sulfate-free gloss shampoo helps.
Can I use a gloss with purple shampoo?
Yes. Purple shampoo once or twice a week helps keep a blonde gloss looking cool.
Is hair gloss vegan?
Some products are described as vegan, such as Floractive Golden Vegan Gloss Protein Treatment Mask. Check each product page for the brand's details.
Is hair gloss safe for keratin-treated hair?
Many glosses are gentle enough, but check the instructions for your smoothing treatment and the gloss before combining them.
Is Zilion an official stockist of these gloss brands?
Yes. Zilion is an official NZ stockist of every brand in this collection, including Joico, Danger Jones, Fanola, Keracolor and Pureology.
Are your products genuine?
Yes. As an official stockist we only sell genuine products.
Do you sell gloss products to salons?
Yes. Many customers are colourists restocking gloss toners and salon-size developers.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is free on NZ orders over $85. Orders under $85 cost a flat $7.99 to metro and rural addresses.
How long does delivery take?
In-stock orders placed before 9am are dispatched the same business day. Metro deliveries take 1 to 4 business days and rural deliveries 3 to 7.
Can I pay with Afterpay or Zip?
Yes. Afterpay and Zip are both available at checkout.
Can I return a gloss I have opened?
No. For hygiene reasons, opened or used products cannot be returned unless they are faulty.
What is your returns policy for unopened products?
Unopened, unused items in original packaging can be returned within 30 days for a change of mind. Return postage and a restocking fee of $10 or 10% (whichever is less) apply.
What if my order arrives damaged?
Email care@zilion.co.nz within 5 days of delivery with your order number and photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund.
Do you deliver to PO Boxes or overseas?
No. Our couriers do not deliver cosmetics to PO Boxes, and we ship within New Zealand only.
Can I track my order?
Yes. Once your order is dispatched you will receive an email with a tracking link.
Why might a shine spray take longer to arrive?
Aerosols travel as dangerous goods, which can add a little transit time.
Can I mix gloss brands?
It is not recommended. Each professional gloss is designed for its own developer and chemistry.
What is the difference between a gloss and a glaze?
The terms are often used interchangeably. Glazes are usually ready-to-use, while professional glosses are mixed with developer.
Does a gloss help frizz?
A gloss smooths the cuticle, which can reduce the look of frizz. For ongoing frizz, pair it with smoothing shampoo and a serum.
