Heat Protection Spray in New Zealand
Every pass of a straightener, curling wand or hot blow-dryer takes a little moisture out of the hair. Over months that shows up as dryness, split ends, frizz and colour that fades too quickly. A heat protectant is the simplest way to cut that damage down, and it is the one styling product hairdressers insist on.
Zilion stocks more than 150 heat protection products, from classic thermal sprays to blow-dry primers, smoothing creams, leave-in treatments and serums with heat defence built in. We are an official NZ stockist of every brand in this collection, including ghd, Redken, Schwarzkopf Professional, KMS, Natural Look, Osmo, Muk Hair, HH Simonsen, L'Oreal Professionnel, Joico and Alfaparf Milano.
About Heat Protectants
Heat protectants work by forming a light film over the hair that slows how quickly heat and moisture move in and out of the fibre. Many also smooth the cuticle, which helps the hair glide under an iron and look shinier afterwards. Some add hold for curls or volume, and others add conditioning or bond care.
The format you choose depends on how you style. Sprays are the most versatile and suit almost everyone. Creams, milks and balms are better for thick, coarse or frizzy hair that needs more smoothing. Serums and oils with heat protection finish the job on dry hair. Use the filters beside the product grid to narrow by brand, price or product type.

Benefits of Using a Heat Protectant
- Less heat damage. A protective film slows the moisture loss that leads to dry, brittle ends.
- Fewer split ends. Hair that is protected every time it is styled tends to break less.
- Smoother results. Most protectants reduce friction, so a straightener glides and hair looks sleeker.
- Colour that lasts. Heat speeds up colour fade, and formulas such as ghd Bodyguard for Coloured Hair are made with that in mind.
- Styles that hold. Thermal setting sprays help curls and waves made with hot tools last longer.
- Faster drying. Blow-dry primers help water evaporate faster, which means less time under the dryer.
- Shine and softness. Many heat protectants add conditioning agents for a glossy, soft finish.
Heat Protection Buying Guide
Choose by hair type. Fine hair suits light sprays such as ghd Bodyguard for Fine Hair or Osmo Thermal Defense. Medium hair suits most sprays. Thick, coarse or frizzy hair does well with creams and balms such as KMS ThermaShape Straightening Creme or Kerasilk Smoothing Blow Dry Cream.
Choose by tool. For blow-drying, a primer or blow-dry spray protects and speeds things up. For straightening, choose a spray or balm designed for flat irons, such as Kerasilk Flat Iron Spray. For curling, a thermal setting spray gives hold as well as protection.
Think about colour and blonde. Colour-treated hair benefits from formulas made for colour, such as ghd Bodyguard for Coloured Hair or Davines Minu. Blondes can add UV protection with System Professional LuxeBlond Bi-Phase.
Apply it properly. Spray or smooth through clean, towel-dried or dry hair in sections, comb through for even coverage and let damp hair dry before using an iron. Reapply before re-styling.
Keep the temperature sensible. A protectant reduces damage but does not make hair heatproof. Use the lowest temperature that styles your hair, especially on fine, lightened or fragile hair.

Heat Protection FAQs
What is a heat protection spray?
It is a leave-in spray applied before heat styling that forms a light film over the hair, helping to reduce moisture loss and damage from dryers, straighteners and curling tools.
Do heat protectants really work?
They reduce damage rather than prevent it completely. Used every time you style, and with sensible temperatures, they help hair stay softer and break less.
When should I apply heat protectant?
Apply it after washing, to towel-dried hair before blow-drying, and again to dry hair before using an iron or wand if your product allows.
Can I use heat protectant on dry hair?
Yes. Many sprays work on dry hair before straightening or curling. Mist lightly and evenly, and let it settle for a moment before using heat.
Can I use a straightener on damp hair with protectant?
No. Let hair dry completely first. Straightening damp hair can cause steam damage even with a protectant.
How much heat protectant should I use?
Enough to lightly cover every section. Mist from about 20 to 30cm away, section by section, and comb through for even coverage.
Do I need a heat protectant for blow-drying?
Yes. Blow-drying is still heat styling, and a primer or blow-dry spray protects hair and can shorten drying time.
What is the difference between a heat protection spray and cream?
Sprays are light and suit most hair types. Creams and balms give more smoothing and conditioning, which suits thick, coarse or frizzy hair.
Which heat protectant suits fine hair?
Light, non-greasy sprays such as ghd Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray for Fine Hair and Osmo Thermal Defense will not weigh fine hair down.
Which heat protectant suits thick or frizzy hair?
Creams and balms such as KMS ThermaShape Straightening Creme, Kerasilk Smoothing Blow Dry Cream and Goldwell StyleSign Straightening Balm add more smoothing.
Which heat protectant suits coloured hair?
ghd Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray for Coloured Hair and Davines Minu Illuminating Heat Protectant Milk are made for colour-treated hair.
Which heat protectant suits blonde hair?
System Professional LuxeBlond Bi-Phase UV and Heat Protect is designed for blonde hair and adds UV protection.
What is ghd Bodyguard?
ghd Bodyguard is ghd's heat protect spray range, sold in 120ml versions for all hair, coloured hair and fine hair.
What are ghd heat styling products?
ghd makes styling products designed to work with the heat of its stylers, including Straight On, Curly Ever After, Pick Me Up, Body Goals and the Rehab leave-in treatments.
What is Wella EIMI Thermal Image?
It is a professional heat protection spray from Wella's EIMI styling range, used before blow-drying and hot tools.
What is K18 Heatbounce?
K18 Heatbounce is a conditioning heat protectant. We stock the full 118ml size and a 47ml travel size.
What is a thermal setting spray?
A thermal setting spray adds hold that is activated by heat, so curls and waves last longer. Redken Thermal Spray 22 High Hold and KMS ThermaShape Hot Flex Spray are examples.
What is a blow-dry primer?
A blow-dry primer is a light spray applied to damp hair that protects from heat and helps hair dry faster. Redken Quick Blowout and Fudge Blow Dry Aqua Primer are popular.
Can a heat protectant also add volume?
Some do. ghd Pick Me Up Root Lift Spray, KMS AddVolume Root And Body Lift and Redken Big Blowout add lift while working with heat.
Can a heat protectant reduce frizz?
Many smooth the cuticle and help hair resist humidity. Davines Love Smooth Perfector and Redken Frizz Dismiss Instant Deflate are made for frizz.
Do heat protectants protect against UV?
Some do. System Professional LuxeBlond Bi-Phase UV and Heat Protect is one example. Check the product description for UV claims.
Do I need a heat protectant for heatless styling?
No. Heat protectants are for hot tools. For air-drying, choose a leave-in or styling cream instead.
Can I use hair oil instead of heat protectant?
Only if the oil is designed for heat, such as ghd Sleek Talker. Ordinary oils can heat up on the hair, so use a proper protectant first.
Can I use heat protectant every day?
Yes. If you use heat every day, use protection every day. Wash regularly so product does not build up.
What temperature should I use with heat protectant?
Use the lowest setting that styles your hair. Fine, lightened or damaged hair usually needs less heat than thick or coarse hair.
Can I use heat protectant on curly hair?
Yes. If you diffuse or straighten curls, a protectant is a good idea. Creams suit curls better than very light sprays.
Can heat protectant be used with hairspray?
Yes. Apply the protectant before heat, then finish with hairspray once the style is done. Avoid ironing over wet hairspray.
Are there heat protectants for men?
Any heat protectant works for men who blow-dry or straighten. A light spray such as Osmo Thermal Defense suits short hair that is blow-dried into shape.
Will heat protectant make my hair greasy?
Not if you choose the right weight for your hair and use the right amount. Fine hair suits sprays rather than creams.
Does heat protectant expire?
Yes. Check the period-after-opening symbol, often 12 months. Keep aerosols away from heat.
Are aerosol heat protectants different from pump sprays?
Aerosols give a fine, even mist and dry quickly. Pump sprays are often a little wetter. Both work; choose the one you prefer.
Do you sell travel-size heat protectants?
Yes. K18 Heatbounce Travel 47ml, Angel En Provence Grapefruit Thermal Protection Spray 80ml, Kerasilk Flat Iron Spray 75ml and Kerasilk Taming Balm 75ml are easy to pack.
Can I take heat protectant spray on a plane?
Pump sprays under 100ml usually suit carry-on liquid limits. Check your airline's rules for aerosols.
What should I use after heat styling?
A light serum or shine spray, such as Natural Look ColourArt Shine Spritz or ghd Dramatic Ending, smooths and adds shine.
Can heat protectant repair damaged hair?
Protectants help prevent further damage. For repair, use a bond or repair treatment such as ghd Rehab Damaged Hair Repairer or a mask.
What is the price range for heat protectants?
Small sprays start around $14, most salon heat protectants cost $25 to $60, and premium treatments such as K18 Heatbounce cost more.
How long does a bottle of heat protectant last?
With daily use, a 200 to 250ml spray usually lasts a few months. Thick or long hair uses more.
Is heat protection the same as a leave-in conditioner?
Not always. Some leave-ins include heat protection, but a regular leave-in conditioner may not. Check the label for heat protection claims.
