Scalp Treatment NZ | Scrubs, Serums & Tonics | Zilion NZ
Scalp Treatment in New Zealand
Healthy-looking hair starts at the scalp. When it is oily by lunchtime, flaky, tight or itchy, or simply weighed down by dry shampoo and styling product, no amount of conditioner will fix the problem. This collection brings together more than 100 products made for the scalp itself: pre-wash scrubs and detox treatments, leave-on serums and lotions, soothing sprays and the classic hair tonics that barbers have used for generations.
Zilion is an official NZ stockist of every brand here, from salon names such as Davines, Malibu C, ROH, Alfaparf Milano, Nioxin Professional and Echosline to barbershop favourites like Vines Vintage, Traditional Barbers, Suavecito and L3VEL3. Orders ship from within New Zealand, with single-use sachets, travel sizes and 1000ml tonics on offer.
About Scalp Treatments
Your scalp is skin, and it reacts to the same things skin does: too much oil, too little moisture, product build-up, hard water and harsh cleansers. Scalp treatments work on that skin rather than on the hair lengths. Some are used before shampooing to loosen build-up, some are massaged in after washing and left on, and tonics are splashed or sprayed on to refresh the scalp between washes.
Most routines combine two or three steps: a scrub or pre-wash treatment once a week, a shampoo suited to your scalp type, and a leave-on serum, lotion or tonic. Many ranges, such as Davines NaturalTech, Davroe Scalp Remedy, Wella SP Balance Scalp and Echosline Balance, are designed to be used together.

Benefits of a Scalp Treatment
- A cleaner scalp. Scrubs and pre-wash treatments lift away oil, dry shampoo and styling residue that shampoo alone can leave behind.
- Fewer visible flakes. Purifying gels, lotions and serums help keep flaking under control between washes.
- More comfort. Calming serums, oils and tonics soothe a scalp that feels tight, dry or itchy.
- Better balance. Rebalancing treatments help an oily scalp stay fresher for longer, so you can stretch the time between washes.
- More body at the roots. Energising and thickening treatments for fine hair leave roots looking fuller.
- Products that work better. A clean scalp lets shampoo, conditioner and leave-in care do their job properly.
- A refreshing routine. Menthol tonics and scalp massage simply feel good, especially after the gym or a hot day.
Scalp Treatment Buying Guide
Work out your scalp type. Oily scalps feel greasy within a day and suit rebalancing and detox treatments. Dry, tight or itchy scalps need calming, moisturising formulas. Flakes call for a purifying treatment. If you are unsure, start with a gentle scrub and a mild shampoo and see how your scalp responds.
Choose the format. Scrubs and pre-wash treatments go on before shampoo, usually once a week. Serums, lotions and sprays are leave-on products used after washing. Tonics can be used daily on dry or towel-dried hair.
Stay with one routine. Scalp ranges such as Davines NaturalTech, Davroe Scalp Remedy Spa, Echosline Balance and ROH Reset are designed as systems, so pairing the shampoo, treatment and serum from the same line keeps results consistent.
Give it time. Leave-on treatments for fine hair are generally used daily over several weeks. Sachets, travel sizes and the Echosline Energy Lotion 10ml are an easy way to try a product first.
Know when to see someone. Scalp treatments are cosmetic. If you have sore patches, sudden shedding or flaking that does not settle, see your GP, pharmacist or a dermatologist.

Scalp Treatment FAQs
What is a scalp treatment?
It is a product designed to care for the skin of the scalp rather than the hair lengths. Scalp treatments include scrubs, pre-wash detox treatments, leave-on serums and lotions, sprays and tonics.
Do I need a scalp treatment?
If your scalp feels oily, flaky, tight, itchy or coated with product, a targeted treatment can help. If it feels comfortable and your shampoo is working, you may not need one.
How often should I use a scalp scrub?
Once a week suits most people. Very oily scalps may like it twice a week, while sensitive scalps may prefer every two weeks.
Do I use a scalp scrub before or after shampoo?
Most scrubs are used on wet hair before shampoo or in place of the first shampoo. Follow the directions on the product, as some are pre-wash treatments applied to dry hair.
What is the difference between a physical and a chemical scalp exfoliator?
Physical scrubs use particles such as sea salt or walnut shell to lift away residue. Liquid pre-wash treatments use active ingredients to loosen build-up without grains.
What is the Davines Solu Sea Salt Scrub?
It is a deep-cleansing sea salt scrub from Davines that purifies and refreshes the scalp and removes build-up. It suits scalps that feel congested from product or oil.
What is in the Davines NaturalTech range?
NaturalTech is Davines' scalp care line. In this collection it includes the Rebalancing Cleansing Treatment, Purifying Gel, Calming Superactive, Elevating Scalp Recovery Treatment, Energising Thickening Tonic, Energizing Gel and Energizing Seasonal Superactive.
What is a hair tonic?
A hair tonic is a liquid that refreshes the scalp and conditions the hair, often with a light grooming effect. Classic barber tonics such as Vines Vintage Bay Rum and Traditional Barbers Hair Tonic are applied to damp or dry hair.
What is bay rum?
Bay rum is a traditional barbershop fragrance and tonic made with bay leaf and spices. Traditional Barbers Bay Rum is used as an aftershave and hair tonic, and Vines Vintage American Bay Rum is a hair and scalp tonic.
Can women use hair tonic?
Yes. Many tonics, such as L3VEL3 Hair Tonic, are made for men and women. Choose one with a fragrance you enjoy.
How do I use a hair tonic?
Sprinkle or spray a little onto the scalp, massage it in with your fingertips, then comb or style as usual. Most tonics can be used daily.
What helps an oily scalp?
Rebalancing and detox treatments such as Davines NaturalTech Rebalancing Cleansing Treatment, Echosline Balance Detox Treatment and De Lorenzo Tricho Scalp Control Toner help an oily scalp stay fresher.
What helps a flaky scalp?
Purifying products such as Davines NaturalTech Purifying Gel, Arata Anti-Dandruff Serum and Angel En Provence Citrus Scalp Dandruff Removing Lotion are made for flaking. Pair them with an anti-dandruff shampoo.
What helps an itchy scalp?
Calming treatments such as Davines NaturalTech Calming Superactive, Holistic Hair Scalp Treatment Oil and Malibu C Scalp Therapy can soothe itching. If it persists or the skin is broken, see your GP or pharmacist.
Is there a scalp treatment for sensitive skin?
Yes. Look for products labelled calming or soothing, such as Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Scalp Relief Calming Tonic or Nioxin Scalp Recovery Soothing Serum, and patch test first.
Can a scalp treatment stop hair loss?
No cosmetic product can treat medical hair loss. Leave-on treatments for fine or thinning-looking hair focus on scalp care and fuller-looking roots; see your GP for sudden or patchy shedding.
What is Redken Thickening Treatment Stemoxydine?
It is a leave-in scalp treatment from Redken for thinning-looking hair. Apply it to the scalp after washing and do not rinse.

Most scalp treatments are unisex. Barber favourites include Slick Gorilla Hair & Scalp Scrub, Suavecito Hair Tonic and Vines Vintage tonics.
Can I use a scalp treatment on coloured hair?
Most leave-on scalp treatments are fine on coloured hair, but scrubs and detox treatments can fade colour faster if used often. Avoid using a scrub just after a colour appointment.
Should I massage my scalp?
Gentle massage with your fingertips or a soft silicone massager helps spread products evenly and feels good. Avoid scratching with your nails.
What does a scalp massager do?
A scalp massager, such as the Arata Scalp Massager with silicone bristles, helps work shampoo and treatments into the scalp and lifts away residue.
Can I use a scalp treatment every day?
Leave-on serums, lotions and tonics are often made for daily use. Scrubs and detox treatments are usually weekly.
Do I use a scalp serum on wet or dry hair?
Most scalp serums go onto a clean, towel-dried scalp, parted in sections. Some, like the Davroe Overnight Serum, are designed to be left on overnight.
Can I use dry shampoo if my scalp is oily?
Yes, but it builds up quickly. A weekly scrub or detox treatment helps clear the residue so your scalp does not feel coated.
Which scalp treatments come in travel sizes?
Malibu C sachets, the Echosline Energy Lotion 10ml, the ROH Daily Hair Tonic 60ml and Actyva P Factor vials are easy to pack.
Are there big sizes of hair tonic?
Yes. Vines Vintage American Bay Rum Hair & Scalp Tonic and Traditional Barbers Bay Rum come in 1000ml bottles, which suit barbershops and regular users.
Do you sell scalp treatment twin packs?
Yes. Vines Vintage tonics, Traditional Barbers Bay Rum, Suavecito Hair Tonic, Slick Gorilla Hair & Scalp Scrub, L3VEL3 Hair Tonic and Dapper Dan Grooming Tonic all come in twin packs.
Is a scalp treatment the same as a hair mask?
No. A hair mask conditions the hair lengths, while a scalp treatment works on the skin of the scalp. Some products, like the KOBO Professional Scalp Intense Balancing Mask, are made for both.
Can scalp treatments help with product build-up from hard water?
Yes. Products that remove mineral build-up, such as Malibu C Scalp Therapy, are designed for this.
Which shampoo should I use with a scalp treatment?
Choose one from the same range or one suited to your scalp type. Our Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, Oily Hair and Sensitive Scalp Shampoo collections are good starting points.
