About Our Toner Collection
A toner is a low-commitment colour that deposits pigment without lifting the hair. It works on the undertone that lightening leaves behind: yellow at the palest levels, gold through the middle, and orange or red on darker bases. Violet cancels yellow, blue cancels orange, and green or ash shades knock back red. Clear and natural shades add shine and soften the result without shifting the tone much at all.
Most toners in this collection are demi-permanent and are mixed with a low-volume developer, then processed for a short time on pre-lightened or naturally light hair. Others are ready-to-use: drops you add to your shampoo or conditioner, sprays you mist through towel-dried hair, and pigmented shampoos you use once or twice a week. Each product page lists the shade number, mixing ratio and size, so check it before you order.
Toner by Type and Result
Acidic gloss toners. The Danger Jones Gloss Toner range is the biggest part of this collection, with 60ml tubes across natural (.0), ash (.1), violet (.2), gold (.3) and copper (.4) families from level 3 to 10, plus the 0.0 clear and a .44 copper booster. Hair Toner Buying Guide
Match the toner to the undertone. Look at the hair in daylight. Pale yellow needs violet (.2 or V shades), gold-orange needs blue-violet or ash (.1, .12 or T shades), and a strong orange on darker hair needs a deeper ash or blue booster. If the blonde is already close, a natural or clear shade will refine it without making it look grey.
Choose the level. A toner cannot lighten. Pick a level that matches or sits slightly below the current depth: level 9 to 10 shades for very pale blonde, 7 to 8 for dark blonde and balayage, and 3 to 6 for brunettes.
Know the mixing system. Danger Jones Gloss Toners are made to work with the Danger Jones Gloss Toner Developer 946ml, Mood toners mix 1:1 with Mood Developer, and Shinefinity, BlondMe Glow and Joico Demi Gloss each have their own activator. Using the matching Developer gives the most predictable result.
Professional or home use. Many toners here are labelled for professional use and require mixing, timing and a strand test. If you are toning at home without salon experience, toning drops, sprays and anti-yellow shampoos are much easier to control.
Plan the aftercare. Keep tone fresh with a purple shampoo once or twice a week and a hydrating conditioner on the other washes. Lightened hair is porous, so a weekly mask helps the toner sit evenly and last longer.
Buy enough. One 60ml tube often covers a regional tone or a short to mid-length root-to-tip; long or thick hair often needs two. Colourists can save by buying the developer in a salon-size bottle.

What does a hair toner do?
A toner deposits a small amount of pigment to correct or refine the tone of lightened or coloured hair. It neutralises unwanted yellow, orange or red and can add shine.
Does toner lighten hair?
No. Toners deposit colour only. If your hair needs to be lighter, it has to be lightened first, then toned.
Which toner cancels yellow?
Violet-based toners cancel yellow. Look for .2 or V shades, such as Danger Jones 10.2 Violet Blonde or Joico Blonde Life Demi Gloss 10V.
Which toner cancels orange?
Blue and ash-based toners neutralise orange. Ash (.1) or ash-violet (.12) shades suit gold-orange blondes, and a blue booster helps on darker bases.
What is a gloss toner?
A gloss toner is a demi-permanent toner, often acidic, that tones and adds shine at the same time. The Danger Jones Gloss Toner range is our best-selling example.
What does acidic toner mean?
Acidic toners have a low pH, which helps close the cuticle after lightening. The result is usually shinier and smoother than with an alkaline toner.
What is the difference between toner and gloss?
The terms overlap. A toner corrects tone, while a gloss focuses on shine; many products, such as Wella Shinefinity and Affinage Gloss, do both.
What is the 0.0 or clear toner for?
A clear shade such as Danger Jones 0.0 or Shinefinity 00/00 Crystal Glaze adds shine without colour. Colourists also mix it with other shades to soften their intensity.
What does the .44 booster do?
The Danger Jones .44 Booster intensifies copper tones. It is mixed with other shades rather than used alone.
How do I read toner shade numbers?
The first number is the level (depth), from 1 darkest to 10 lightest. The numbers after the dot show the tones: .0 natural, .1 ash, .2 violet, .3 gold and .4 copper.
What is Wella Shinefinity?
Shinefinity is Wella Professionals' zero-lift, demi-permanent colour glaze for shine, tone and depth. It includes shades such as 09/61 Iced Platinum and boosters in rosé, violet and blue.
What is Joico Blonde Life Quick Tone?
Quick Tone is a liqui-creme toner from the Joico Blonde Life range, designed to perfect pre-lightened hair in five minutes or less. It comes in Violet, Silver and Sand.

What are toning drops?
Toning drops, such as Keracolor Violet Toning Drops, are concentrated pigments you add to your shampoo or conditioner. They let you control how much toning you get at home.
What are Crazy Color Power Pigment Drops?
They are high-concentration colour drops in purple, blue, pink and red, used to boost or adjust a colour mix. Purple is one of our best sellers in this collection.
What is a toning spray?
A toning spray is a leave-in mist with violet or black pigment, such as Osmo Super Ice or Milk Shake Icy Blonde. It neutralises brass between washes and adds hydration.
Do I need a developer with toner?
Most demi-permanent toners do, usually a low-volume developer from the same brand. Toning drops, sprays and shampoos do not need developer.

How long do I leave toner on?
It depends on the brand and the result you want; most demi toners process for a short time, and some quick toners take five minutes or less. Always follow the instructions for the specific product.
Should toner go on wet or dry hair?
Many toners are applied to towel-dried, freshly lightened hair, but some systems are applied to dry hair. Follow the instructions for your chosen product.
How long does toner last?
Demi-permanent toner usually fades gradually over several weeks, depending on how often you wash and how porous your hair is. Purple shampoo and colour-safe care help it last.
Why did my toner fade so quickly?
Very porous hair, hot water, frequent washing and clarifying shampoos all speed up fading. Use a sulfate-free or colour-safe shampoo and tone again when needed.
Can toner turn my hair purple or grey?
Yes, if the shade is too cool for the undertone or left on too long, especially on very pale or porous hair. A strand test helps you avoid it.
How do I fix toner that went too ashy?
A violet or grey cast often fades after a few washes. A clarifying shampoo can speed this up, but speak to your colourist if it persists.
Can I use toner on brown hair?
Yes. Level 3 to 6 toners refresh faded brunettes, cool unwanted warmth and add gloss, but they will not lighten brown hair.
Can I tone grey or silver hair?
Yes. Violet and silver shades brighten grey and white hair and reduce yellowing. Toning sprays and purple shampoo are easy ways to start.
Can I tone hair at home?
Yes, but many toners here are professional products that need mixing, timing and a strand test. Toning drops, sprays and purple shampoo are simpler options for home use.
Should I do a patch test?
Yes. Follow the brand's instructions for a skin allergy test before using any oxidative colour, including demi-permanent toner.
How much toner do I need?
A 60ml tube is often enough for short to mid-length hair or a regional tone. Long or thick hair may need two tubes plus matching developer.
Can I mix toner shades?
Within the same brand, yes. Colourists often mix a natural shade with an ash or violet, or add clear to soften the tone.
Can I mix different toner brands?
It is not recommended. Each system is designed with its own developer and chemistry, so mixing brands can give unpredictable results.
How often can I tone my hair?
Many people tone every four to eight weeks, or with each lightening appointment. Use purple shampoo or toning drops in between.
What aftercare should I use after toning?
Use a colour-safe or purple shampoo once or twice a week, a hydrating conditioner every wash, and a mask weekly. Heat protection also helps keep tone fresh.
Is toner damaging?
Demi-permanent and acidic toners are much gentler than lightener, and many contain conditioning ingredients. Hair can still dry out after lightening, so keep up the moisture.

Can I return a toner I have opened?
No. For hygiene reasons, opened or used products cannot be returned unless they are faulty.
What is your returns policy for unopened toner?
Unopened, unused items in original packaging can be returned within 30 days for a change of mind. Return postage and a restocking fee of $10 or 10% (whichever is less) apply.
What if my toner arrives damaged?
Email care@zilion.co.nz within 5 days of delivery with your order number and photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund.
Do you deliver to PO Boxes or overseas?
No. Our couriers do not deliver cosmetics to PO Boxes, and we ship within New Zealand only.
